Schickel’s definition of criticism is actually excellent. True criticism is the act of recreating what the author (be ((s))he painter, sculptor, photographer, writer or . . . ) created but doing so in critical terms. The term “criticism” in this sense bears no relation to evaluation of the work. It is simply an examination of what the author did, why it was done the way it was, and in general an unfolding of the significance of the work.
