I haven’t had time to do much of anything while writing this book on the digital media revolution, so I’m behind on my reading. I’ll be flying to Florida Wednesday for a journalism symposium, so I headed to Borders yesterday to pick up some books. Here’s my shopping list, and here’s what they had in. (It’s no wonder Amazon has made such in-roads.)
• Emergence, by Steven Johnson. The first clerk looked at the book classification (Ind/Hist) and figured it was in the history section, where he couldn’t find it. I insisted it was a science book. Finally a second clerk found it in the Computers section. Bought it.
• Power to the Edge, a new book by Dave Alberts and Richard Hayes. Not in, available by order.
• Backstory, by Ken Auletta. The computer said a copy was available in the media section, but we couldn’t find it.
• Wine for Women, a new book by my friend Leslie Sbrocco. Not in, availble by order.
• Fools Rush In, by Nina Munk. Available.
• There Must Be a Pony in Here Somewhere, by Kara Swisher. Bought it.
• A Million Little Pieces, a “stunning” new memoir by James Frey, partly because it has received high praise and partly to see if this James Frey is related to the James N. Frey (How to Write a Damn Good Novel) whom I studied under at the Squaw Valley Community of Writers at Lake Tahoe in 1992. Alas, the computer said the book was in, but we couldn’t find it in the “self-help” section.
• Chicago Manual of Style. Bought it.
• Crypto, by Steven Levy. A bit dated, but still a classic. Not in, available by order.
• The daVinci Code, by Dan Brown. Good plane fare. Bought it.
• Geeks: How Two Lost Boys Rode the Internet Out of Idaho, by Jon Katz. Not in, available by order.
• Turn of the Century, a novel in paperback by Kurt Andersen. Not in, available by order.
• Defining Vision: How Broadcasters Lured the Government into Inciting a Revolution in Television, a somewhat dated title by Joel Brinkley. Not in, available by order.
• Global Hollywood, by Richard Maxwell and others. Not in, available by order.
