So it’s the bottom of the 7th inning here at SBC Park in San Francisco, and the Mets (my team) and the Giants (the home team) are tied 7-7. Lots of Mets fans in attendance, witnessing another shaky outing by Tom Glavine. My wife Mary (who’s under the weather) and I decided to take our 5-year-old Bobby to see his first major league baseball game. We accepted an invitation to the game from the Rutgers Club of Northern California (I’m a Rutgers College alum) and met a group of terrifically nice people before the game at an “urban tailgate party” (meaning it was held not in the parking lot but at the 21st Amendment bar & grill).
I’ve been curious about the wi-fi service I’d heard about here — it may still be the only MLB ballpark with free wi-fi — so I brought my Apple Titanium Powerbook along and, sure enough, it was a breeze jacking in. It’s a beautful, crisp summer day, and SBC Park is one of the most fan-friendly stadiums in the country, with a wonderful play area for kids. We’re in the nose-bleed seats, section 328, but if the infield’s a bit distant, the views of the sailboats in the bay are incomparable. Didn’t lug along the digital camera, though.
Later: We left in the eighth inning. Game had a wild finish: Both teams scored a run in the 10th, and the Mets scored twice in the 12th. Final score: Mets 11 Giants 9.
