We at Ourmedia are big supporters of the efforts by Participatoryculture.org to create a free, open-source platform for Internet television.
They’ve come a big step closer to that vision this week with the release of DTV: Internet TV on Your Mac. As the site says:
DTV is a new, free and open-source platform for internet television and video. An intuitive interface lets users subscribe to channels, watch video, and build a video library. Our publishing software lets you broadcast full-screen video to thousands of people at virtually no cost. The project is non-profit, free and open source, and built on open standards. A Windows version of DTV and a full website are well underway and will arrive in the next several weeks.
(They’re also sponsoring a contest: You’ll win $1,000 if they pick your design or a DTV interface mockup.)
I argue in Darknet that we’ll really be in control of our media environment only when we break the thought stranglehold that the cable and satellite companies exert in our living rooms.
This is how we get there — by creating our own media, and using distribution vehicles like DTV.
So now there’s no reason why you can’t have your own TV channel. You don’t need to be a videographer to have your own channel — use Broadcast Machine to link to videos from all over the place. Now everyone can have a voice.
Very, very cool.

I was thinking about the same concept with my music. To a certain extent Itunes has given me the choice to choose what songs I want to buy without purchasing the entire album. I have control of my media and like it. I think if the per song model survives it will give the record company’s and content producers the incentive to make good music not just one song out of 10. The choices and quality should get better if the market can chose…
Great work…..Is your book avalible at Audible.com?
