Jason Falls at Social Media Explorer: The Practical Guide To Content Tagging In Social Bookmarking. Principal points:
Keep It Simple
I would recommend using no more than 2-3 tags per piece of content and keep the words very generic. If it’s about social media measurement then maybe tag it “socialmedia” and “measurement”. If you’re ever tempted to get into monitoring, ROI, quantifying success, etc., default
to “socialmedia” and “measurement”. And remember that tagging, especially in Delicious, is space sensitive. Thus “social media” will be tagged as “social” and then also as “media.” Be sure to eliminate the space and make it “socialmedia.”Keep It The Same

Jason offered an excellent guide to content tagging on his blog yesterday. Here two additional tips from me:
1) Tag all of the blog posts you leave comments on (I use “commented” in my Delicious account), so that you a) have an account of where and how you’re joining conversations online b) have an easy way to check back in on comment threads a day or two later
2) Create a unique tag for certain kinds of content as you do research/prepare to give a presentations. I’ve used tags like Pod101 and BR101 for talks on an introduction to podcasting and best practices in blogger outreach.
I’m really a big fan of Delicious and it’s been a key tool in my arsenal over the last couple of years. Not fancy, but oh, so useful!
