Intel exec on social media literacy from JD Lasica on Vimeo.
Tristan Wilkinson, director for public sector for EMEA, Intel UK, talks about the need for social media literacy in this 9-minute video. Tristan met with the Traveling Geeks in London at the outset of our Innovation UK trip yesterday.
Wilkinson told us the term “digital exclusion” needs to be revisited because people are using technology in increasingly sophisticated ways, particularly around social media and social networks. The danger is that a large portion of the population will have less access to jobs, private records and digital databanks if they’re not conversant with social media.
He said of Facebook, Flickr, YouTube and Twitter: “If you’ve never used these empowering technologies, they can seem pretty alien.”
Wilkinson returned a few times to an important refrain: “If you’re not in the gang, you’re not participating.” It’s time to assess the ramificaitons of being part of the gang, he said. “The cost of not being part of the gang is beginning to be felt not just socially but economically.”

This was an awesome video – very, very good. Separates all the 'fun' and the almost incestuous nature of those global gangs and what they are actually doing for the world.
I like this guy.
