I’ve been meaning for a few weeks now to post photos of my trip to Guatemala a few years ago to Flickr, so here’s a set of 15 of my favorite shots.
I’ll admit to watching CBS’s Survivor: Guatemala, chiefly for the setting rather than the contrived dramatic elements of the “reality TV” series.
Here’s the story I wrote (published on the front page of several major newspapers’ travel sections) about my travels through the heart of Guatemala, from Lake Atitlan to the Mayan highlands. I like being a traveler, not a tourist. Of all the exotic vacations I’ve taken over the years, Guatemala remains the most memorable.

Hi J.D. Terrific photos – thanks for sharing. I took a seven-week trip starting in Mexico City by bus and headed to Guatemala in winter 2003. One of my own life travel highlights myself. I also settled down for 3 1/2 weeks of Spanish study in Xela, or Quetzaltenago.
As you know, the towns around Lake Atitlan were hit hard by Hurricane Stan. I ought to post a few of my photos too. Here’s a local charity (I like the name, village to village) I heard about through the Global Voices blog.

Absolutely, Evelyn — that was another consideration in publishing them: Hurricane Stan relief efforts. Thanks for sharing the link, and let us know when you post some pictures. It was a magical experience.
