It was my pleasure during the past few week to serve as a judge in the 2008 Total Recut Video Remix Challenge. After an initial vote by the public, the judges’ panel — also including Lawrence Lessig, Henry Jenkins, Mark Hosler, Alison Hanold for Pat Aufderheide, Matt Mason, Kembrew McLeod and Luminosity — reviewed eight finalists. The contestants tackled the challenge, "What is Remix
Culture?"
Today the winners were announced, and I’m happy that my top choice, DJ Clown’s Xmas in New York City (above), took first place and wins a new laptop computer. I think it just kicks. You can download it if it streams too slowly.
Total Recut is an online social networking community for fans and creators of video remixes,
recuts and mash-ups that facilitates online collaboration between video
artists. Owen Gallagher launched the site last year to promote a balance between protecting the rights of copyright owners and
enabling artists to express themselves freely using the relatively new medium
of online digital video.
Congrats to all those who entered, and to Owen for organizing the competition.
