Back in 1999, I wrote about the first-person narrative news magazine Orato.com, out of New Zealand. In 2001 I followed up with a report about the burst bubble in content sites, with Orato struggling to find funding.
Well, now comes word that Orato.com is alive and well and publishing as a citizen journalism site out of Vancouver. Writes associate editor Cecilia Jamasmie:
I have been browsing around grassroots media sites for days with the hope of finding potential partners in our efforts to promote freedom of expression and to give voice to the voiceless. I have to confess I was happily impressed by what you’re doing at Ourmedia.
Orato comes from the Latin and it means "I speak." That is exactly what you will find in our pioneer news Web site: people. We are a citizen journalism news Web site based in Vancouver, Canada that aims put a human face on the news by showcasing vivid, first-person stories from individuals involved in current events. Whether it is politics,
sports, entertainment, science, love or war, we aim to capture news in its rawest form and be a celebration of every person’s right to be heard in their own words.
Nice work. Check it out.
